Last book of the prequels about the backstory of how "Ri ear a" was formed with Royce, Hadrian, and their supporting cast. Also covers the backstory of other characters, which was great. Even better than volume 1 of the prequels!

I was a bit disappointed in this one. Mostly because the author contradicts the original series. (I'll try to avoid spoilers here but I am going to mention some over all plot points so be warned)

In Book one of the Riyria Revelations our two heroes become involved with a conspiracy and they spend much of the book trying to figure out who is responsible and who can and can't be trusted. However, in this book (a prequel to theft of swords) events occur that not only alert Riyria that there IS a conspiracy against the king they make it quite clear who is behind it. It was a very big break in continuity that kind of ruined the whole thing for me.

I kind of want to give this book a 4 star rating, but it just didn't feel quite that good, so 3 it is. Sullivan does a nice job of setting up for Theft of Swords, though it's been long enough since I read the original series that I don't recall for certain how much of this we already knew for sure.

This was a truly entertaining novel that hit all the marks in terms of action, great characters and engaging story line. Looking forward to continuing with this series.

5 Stars for a great read.

Some of the characters are really stereotypes, and it would be nice to see more women take initiative. Still an entertaining story.

Every time I read a Riyria book, it just makes me happy and can take me out of any reading slump. I enjoy reading about Royce and Hadrian and their escapades and learning new things about them and all the other characters in their world. It just fascinates me :) In The Rose and the Thorn, we get to see some more back story and how their headquarters came to be. Although a sad story, we also get introduced to Hilfred and see how he got to where he is. The plot moved a little slowly, but I was never not interested. Another great read :D

A fun, trope laden, popcorn fantasy. I always liked [a:Fritz Leiber|23001|Fritz Leiber|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1423163995p2/23001.jpg]'s Lankhmar series and this is a modern version of that with much stronger female characters. Not that that's saying much!

This is the second book in The Riyria Chronicles. Royce and Hadrian have survived a year as partners, managing to not kill each other. They return to Melbourne and a chance encounter has them set up a semi-permanent base. But first, their mutual heroine, Gwen the owner of an upscale brothel, is in trouble. They will help her, even without her permission. And of course they get caught up in a plot to execute the Monarchs entire family. I continue to love this series! It was a great book to pick up between more difficult reads in my queue.

Please please please you guys make my day and add this series if you haven't yet because everyone needs Royce and Hadrian in their lives.

3.5
Yet another fun book from the Riyria world.
It was a bit all over the place, maybe because it was trying too much to tie everything to the original story. Almost all the characters and most of the story line were referenced in the riyria revelations books and as nice as it was to hear about this people again and have more of their back story... It wasn't exactly enough for me?
I still got really emotional by the end and now I want to re-read revelations to pay more attention to Hilfred.
Anyway it was still really enjoyable and I did read most of it in only one day so on that front those books never disappoint!
