Another thoroughly enjoyable book from Mr. Sullivan. On to Death of Dulgath!

I really liked the Riyria Revelations and have recommended the series to friends and patrons at my library. I was disappointed in the first prequel, The Crown Tower, and struggled to finish it, so I approached The Rose and the Thorn with some hesitation.

I'm happy to see that in this volume Sullivan returns to his previous form. The plot moved along quickly and we found out more about the characters we meet in the original books. I enjoyed the parts about Royce and Hadrian the most (with one exception, more about that later) but also liked our introduction to Viscount Albert Winslow. I found some of the passages about Reuben Hilfred and Medford House a bit slow, but not excessively so.

Royce engages in some brutal torture and revenge murder, which seemed out of keeping with the overall tone of the book. We knew he had some terrible acts in his past, but it's one thing to know he did them and another to have them described in detail.

Still, that's a minor criticism compared to my overall enjoyment of the book. If you made it through The Crown Tower, you definitely want to read The Rose and the Thorn.

Ben fatto.

This book was everything that you want a prequel to be and more. Following a relatively "Okay" but still good first book in the Chronicles, I wasn't expecting much from this, but was extremely pleasantly surprised.

Plot was well developed and interesting, as it tied in with many elements we got to know from Revelations. Character development was just fantastic, with a particular emphasis on Ruben Hilfred (our favorite body guard), giving us his backstory along with details about an event that will be very familiar to readers of Sullivan's original series. It was also great getting some more insight into Royce and Gwen's relationship.

Highly recommend this. I was completely invested from page one. Even if you don't continue reading through the Riyria Chronicles, getting to this book is well worth it! Sullivan has impressed me yet again.

This was a fun read. Despite all the death (which is sometimes graphic and gory), it is somehow more light-hearted than the third Riyria Revelations book. I mean, the things Hadrian and Royce get up to, and the fact that they get away with it all, is a bit unbelievable, but it's still fun and enjoyable. I look forward to the next one in this series.
