Remarkable. My views on charity organizations and how we tackle world poverty is forever changed. EVERYONE should read this book.

If you're feeling called to donate more time, money or expertise to help make the world a better place, this book is for you. If you're not yet feeling called, give the book a try and you just might change your mind. As in their first book , Half the Sky (about the plight of women world-wide), this book outlines areas in need of improvement and then highlights people who are actually making a positive difference in those areas. And Kristoff and WuDunn have found a lot of people doing cool things. The second half of the book includes some of the current science on altruism - what causes it, how can we increase it etc. There is also an interesting discussion on the new model of combining for-profit businesses with a social goal. There is plenty of food for thought, plenty of inspiration for getting off your butt and plenty of practical advice for how to do so. Donating money, time or expertise to existing, proven projects is their preference - there are already an abundance of good things going most of which just need more support. To increase your own well being, and the world's, invest a tiny bit of time and effort, and a path will appear.

This is such an inspiring book. But more important than the vignettes it shares of various people around the globe reaching out and helping others, or being helped, it gives concrete ideas on how each of us can do more to help either at home or abroad and affirms that any help does make a difference.

This was an appropriate book to read at the start of a new year. Just like Half the Sky, it was an inspirational book about the good that can be done by an individual. I like that they do not sugar coat the non-profit/aid world, but still feel that it is important to do what you can to help those around you. It gave me a lot of food for thought.....

Kristof and WuDunn slay me again. Not quite in the same way as Half the Sky, but this book is hard-hitting, nonetheless. I wish this could be required reading for every human walking the planet. I love how these authors use science and psychology and thorough research to support their appeal to change your perspective on what makes a difference in the lives of others--and yourself. (also: fostercare and adoption champions and attachment-parenting enthusiasts will appreciate the chapters on early childhood development.)

Kristof and WuDunn have followed up their incredible Half the Sky with this close look at organizations around the world and successes they have found addressing issues of poverty and exploitation.

A Path Appears lacks the focus that its predecessor had--locked as HTS was on issues of women's empowerment around the world. That makes it a little harder to follow, easier to put down. But what APA does include is a depth that HTS didn't have. WuDunn and Kristof aren't just interested in what looks great, they also focus on what works, what can be proven, and what charities must do to ensure that they are spending donations most effectively.

I'll admit, my favorite anecdotes from the book showed that there is an inoculation against ignorance in America: it's about getting books into the hands of infants and toddlers who miss out on opportunities for learning and vocabulary expansion during key years of brain development.

I was overall unimpressed with this. Think Chicken Soup for Volunteers - short stories, very little practical application pointers.
