Very happy to have read it, but sad that it’s finished, and I’ll now have to read something else that’s guaranteed to be inferior. Book 3 was better, but I think that was partly down to a smoother translation.
Dinged a quarter of a point because his female characters don’t seem to feel quite as real and fully formed as the male ones.
Recommended for Murakami fans and off-kilter fiction.

The feeling I got from the second book were only confirmed and amplified in this third one... I kept reading to see where it would go, but it just didn't go anywhere. Very repetitive until the last few chapters, which didn't provide any answer.
I wanted to like this story as it was recommended to by by a friend, but it just wasn't for me.

This was a fascinating novel. I think it has its flaws, but the length and the somewhat rambling plot felt critical to me for the overall journey. I plan to read much more of Murakami's works and I am excited to see how this compares. I think this one is very decisive, and I have a feeling most of his work will be that way.

There are things that many people will find off-putting in this novel, but I believe the ugliness of these characters lives is what makes this book so beautiful. But some of the scenes do come off as creepy and do match the manga culture to me at times.

I think this one will stick with me and my feelings for this book will evolve quite a bit over time.
