The story was messy compared to the first book in the series. I liked both the casino and the piracy storyline, but it felt like reading two books in one. The first two hundred pages or so were setup and could have been cut down by a lot. By the end it was hard to keep all the characters and double-crosses straight and the threads did not come together as satisfyingly as they did in the first book.

Additionally, because the author killed off a bunch of characters in the first book, he had to reestablish a bunch of new characters and their importances and they just didn't feel as vivid or meaningful as the ones in the first book.

That said, there were lots of really fun moments and the writing overall was engaging. The author also did a way better job including woman characters vs. the first book - not necessary as main characters, but just filling his world with about an equal ratio of male/female main characters, side characters, shopkeepers, children, etc. Like in the first book, Lynch is good at describing characters, scenes, and dialogue vividly.

The Brotherband Chronicles could never. I loved the pirates. The kittens thing never fails to amuse me. I love their friendship so much. No words just wow. I wouldn't want to live their life even for a second.

Great like the first, but not as great. Strangely paced, and has a fake out flash forward that ends up being nothing which really annoyed me.

What to say - I love this series! and it is save to say, that if you liked book one, you will definitely like book two too.
I especially like to be able to explore more of the world, and not being bound to just the one city anymore in book two - and the new adventures that are awaiting! Lots of fun, action, friendship and adventure going on once again. Perfect entertainment if you ask me!

YAYYY NEXT LOCKE LAMORA BOOK!!!

ok so starting with positives: i love how locke and jean’s relationship goes through complications in this book, especially now that they are
the only ones left.
i think that was really well done, and my favorite moment of this book was when they were in vel virazzo and locke was at rock bottom, and jean basically forced him out of his stupor. i also love the new characters we were introduced to. faves are zamira and ezri obviously. the pirate ship arc was also really really cool.
ezri and jean have eclipsed sablocke as the straight people of all time, will NEVER forgive scott lynch for what he did to ezri.
yeah the highlight of this book were the characters and their dynamics, and the way scott lynch wrapped up MOST of his loose ends. the action scenes were awesome too.

now, for the critiques. this book pales in comparison to the first. firstly, the gray king was a much more compelling villain than stragos, and camorr was a much cooler setting than tal verrar. stragos was cool tho, i will give him that. i like that he was different from the gray king. also, i feel like some of the conflicts were contrived.
what the fuck was merrain’s deal?? it was never really explained, unless i missed something. there was mention of a tattoo… bondsmage?? idk. speaking of, WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE BONDSMAGI???
also also, this is just a me thing, could not visualize most of this book bc idk anything about ships.

oh and also, i wish this book had dealt even more with locke as an altruist.
ik they sacked salon corbeau, but I wish the dismantling of the amusement war had been the whole book.

still enjoyed it, still love this series immensely, am very excited for republic of thieves which im starting shortly.
