Read about ten pages of the book, realized it's just not for me.

Could not put it down. The beginning in particular is completely captivating, with all the descriptions of the jungle and this incredible around the world trip Holly is taking with her husband that turns very very nasty. Of course, we know that Holly will live but we don't know if Fitz will live, or how they will be rescued because it seems impossible Really gripping, sometimes painful to read as we learn about their starvation. But if you like survival stories, pick this one up.

A honeymoon trip backpacking around the world turned into a nightmare for a young couple in 1973. Holly and Fitz were in it for the adventure of a lifetime but, instead, barely survived 26 days of being stranded on a raft in an offshoot of a Bolivian river, after taking a wrong turn. This segment of their odyssey began with an attempt to leave a remote town by plane for another destination. Instead, the plane crashed. The events following are not to be believed and their survival is a miracle. It's a great story of young love, faith, perseverance, the kindness of strangers and sheer luck. I did find the book a bit tedious as Holly described in minutiae their daily activities on the raft. A bit like Groundhog Day but much more interesting. Their happenstance rescue by natives in a boat is nothing short of a miracle. After they recovered and returned home, six months later they were off in continuation of their trip of a lifetime. Every March 16, the day they were rescued, they honor it with a recreation of the first meal they were served after their rescue.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was not good. I recommend this book if its a paperback! A privileged white woman and her husband think they can ride the Madre de Dios river 40 miles on a raft they built on their own...guess what happens?
Maybe it was the narrator making Holly sound shrill, but it was satisfying to hear about them eating slimy things out of the opaque river while reminiscing about lobster dinners. I had no sympathy for them.

So I didn't actually finish it but I'm counting it cause I was almost done. (Read it against my will.) It was boring. For such a dangerous situation, the writing was really.... laissez-faire. And while I feel generally sympathetic, I honestly couldn't care less? Like, why think going on a raft in an extremely unfamiliar environment is a good idea? Who knows! The pictures were cool though.
