It follows straight on from book 1. There was a passage describing Egg having basically a panic attack and it was spot on. My 10 year old was reading them just before me and I pointed it out to him.

SPOILERS FAM, SPOILLLLLLER

This book started off a bit rocky but in the end, I'd have to say it's EGGcelent! (get it? chronicles of EGG? right??). I think it was really well written but the ending was kind of a bunch of things pushed together like Egg's fathers death and Egg nearly being hanged, the map being useless which was the whole plot of the book just ripped out in a few pages, etc etc, I could go on for a while. I really think the plot and everything was well put together and everything EGGcept (except) the ending which I said. The last sentence was, "Why do we need a carpenter?" "because this ship is sinking". LIKE WHAT KIND OF CLIFFHANGER IS THAT. THAT IS WORSE THEN RICK RIORDAN!!! Alsooooo, the deaths!! And family problems like whyyyy is it so sad? Basically, Egg's sister goes CRAY CRAY deciding whether to kill her family, thinking she is queen and for all we know, she could be dead. Eggs father was shot three times, three different angles! Eggs brother, starts crying even though he usually seems so tough and eggs mom died giving him birth. Along with, his uncle being super COOL. But thats besides the point. This was DEFIANTLY WELL WRITTEN yet why ruin the plot?? the whole plot was figuring out the map, and after like 1000000 pages (jk), the map is useless?!? Overall, GREAT BOOK

i liked this book even more than i liked deadweather and sunrise, because it had a character in it named kira, spelled the way my mom spells it, which is a rarity indeed.

In the middle book of this trilogy, Egg and his new pal Guts find themselves on an adventure southward to new lands. Egg has memorized a symbol map to an old tribes mythical treasure. They meet up with characters new and old and Egg gets into some seriously dangerous predicaments. I read this book aloud to my daughter -- it took a while only because the nightly reading routine has been a lot more sporadic of late. I am nearing the end of an era. Although, not yet. My daughter has informed me that I will be reading the third book to her (just as soon as it released in paperback -- this April.)

I really liked this book. The only thing I didn't like was that some of the characters don't really have a ton of personality while some have a ton. For example, if someone were to ask me to describe the main character in one word, I wouldn't know what to say (other than his name haha). But then there's a character named Guts who is completely developed and has almost too many personality traits. But other than the characters, I really liked the story and the book overall was really good.
