2.5 stars: I love the world this book takes place in (earth but with magic)! But apart from that, this book was so hard for me to get through. The characters were not really likable and the 6 different POVs was tiresome. It also felt like nothing really happened in the first 85% of the book. The last 15% did keep me engaged, but it took so much effort to get to that point. While I did like the ending, the book as a whole does not make me want to read the next one.
The book starts by explaining our premise - six people get invited to join a secret society. After reading like 20% of the book, we still hadn't gotten past the initial offer! I was super worried that the book would drag on and on. To make things worse, the main characters are immediately clique-y, playing a game with the others, and very much "us vs. them." However, after a while I shifted my view to see the book less as a description of events and more as a description of the relationships between characters and I liked the book a lot more for it.
The dark academia vibes were great. We knew something was off, but not what, and so a lot of the book felt less like fantasy and more like suspense. The foreshadowing was also done well - I had a vague sense of what was wrong and was able to predict the "villain" characters, but not how the villain's actions would come to pass. I felt satisfied that I saw it coming, but not that the book was predictable.
I do have two gripes with this book. One is that it is sometimes hard to read about the characters. I immediately hated Parisa, Callum, and Ezra which made it hard to get through their parts of the book. They are extremely obnoxious and think that they are superior but with nothing backing that up. They clearly went through traumas, but we get no insight to that.
Similarly, this book has a giant Chekhov's gun that is never seen through.
This book leaves a lot unexplained and I felt like I didn't even understand the characters super well at the end. Perhaps the next book explains what's going on a bit more, but the ending left me more confused and unsure than the middle of the book did.
Overall, I think The Atlas Six stretched itself too thin by trying to do a multi POV from all the initiates' point of views. It meant I was never with a character long enough to feel like I understood them.

Spoiler
I mean you can't talk about an inevitable murder and then have Ezra suddenly time travel and screw everything up. I know that that is exactly what Ezra was trying to do but it felt off and like a deus ex machina. I also find it anti-climactic that Callum finds out that Tristan (and everyone else complicitly) were planning to kill him... and then just nothing? Everyone moves on?This book leaves a lot unexplained and I felt like I didn't even understand the characters super well at the end. Absolutely loved the ending, the scale of the world and the stakes. Everything just fits together really nicely at the end, but there is still plenty of stuff left unanswered for the sequel. Making each chapter from different characters perspectives is also really clever, as I could see all of the character's motivations from their own viewpoint.

Narrator pronounced Tokyo & Osaka in a distracting way. Will read as a book, just can’t handle the audiobook.
I did not enjoy this book at all. 60% through this book and I DNF'd it. Absolute torture!!!!!
where tf was the plot the entire book is just everyone hating each other not even witty banter it was just so dull and repetitive. also i’m so confused by the magic system it was barely/poorly explained and at the same time there’s worm holes and time travel and i don’t know what’s going on and the ending confused me and it was boring too. full disclosure i either didn’t give a damn about any of the characters or absolutely hated them (hey parisa). except reina but she gets like 2 pages of the spotlight so i guess i’m not irritated by her because i don’t know enough about her to hate her. i guess the illustrations were cool i couldn’t tell who was who for the guys though. i was either bored out of my mind or irritated by the characters which sucks because i was so excited to read because i expected a dark academia with morally grey characters and libraries and action/mysteries and whatnot. but no i got a waste of trees where the worlds dullest characters talked about how much they wanted to kiss or kill the other or talked about teleportation but that didn’t even make sense and all the while the author managed to develop a love pentadecagon that goes absolutely nowhere because all the relationships are half developed. biggest disappointment of the year for me reading-wise but ig i shouldn’t be surprised because i found this book thru booktok
