Okay I loved this book. It wasn’t five stars because it was a little pretentious but I felt very invested in the characters. The plot is fully driven by the characters and their relationships to one another, which is interesting because nothing really happens even though the stakes seem to be very high. But really it’s just a bunch of people who hate each other and it’s very entertaining. I would like the boys to kiss ☝️ if I could have one wish please

I get why some readers love this, but it's 300 pages too long. All the characters are unlikeable and are too similar and blend together. Also, the plot was so thin that it made me question if this book was just about the characters researching, being assholes to each other, and asking questions about their magic (and answering those questions with questions). This was too pretentious for me. But I am not a Dark Academia fan (and this is just one big vibe). I DNF this book a year ago and tried it again for a book club this year and still disliked it.

I MIGHT read the sequels, but honestly this was a really slow read. I read maybe half the book before I just switched to audio so I didn't have to do any of the work.
So maybe I'll find out what happens next, maybe not, but it certainly won't be something I lose sleep over.
