This book is like no other, it is written as part memoir and part fiction which Richard does an absolutely stellar job in creating an authentic and thrilling true crime story. This book felt so real that I had to keep looking back to the beginning of the book where it states that the murders were completely and utterly fictional.
It's based in 1988 where Richard has moved back to his parent's house to cut down on expenses to save for his upcoming wedding and to launch his horror magazine 'Cemetery Dance'. Richard often reflects on his childhood growing up in Edgewood and all the mischievous stunts that he pulled with his friends as children. I was so invested in this story from the beginning, it really felt like you are not only getting to know about the author Richard but have also entered into a dark and spine-tingling world of horror where there may be a supernatural killer lurking at every corner.
Richard manages to get inside intel from his friend Carly, who conveniently is a journalist for the local newspaper. Carly's character is written so well, that you can perfectly picture who she was and you had a real grip on her personality. I was eager to learn more about Carly and what would happen to her in the aftermath of the killings.
As if I wasn't already in the throws of this story, it also includes very realistic photographs of the crimes, victims and of various different parts of Edgewood. This was an excellent touch and made it feel all the more authentic, I was honestly convinced throughout most of the story that I was indeed reading a true crime story.
After 30 years, the crimes are still unsolved until DNA shines a light on who 'The Boogeyman' really is, the ending was deliciously satisfying and the story that had begun as a marvellous concept was then executed perfectly. This is the best book that I have read in a long time and is certainly the only book of its kind that I have ever read. Do not hesitate in purchasing this book, it's a haunting and riveting book that is next to impossible to put down.

dark mysterious

Thank you to those who recommended this book to me! I couldn’t stop listening to this book (yup, listened to it in one day). The author’s use of elements from fiction and nonfiction make this a creepy crime book. I enjoyed the references to Stephen King as he did write with him. (Those books have been in my TBR.) I’m now excited for the next book.

Very interesting way of writing a true crime mystery. I really enjoyed how he wrote it like a true crime podcast.

*Not a horror or scary read*
With that being said I’m disappointed in whoever decided it was to be under that genre.
And that was the main reason I picked it up!!!!

The writer has much talent and a way with words and if it were a horror or scary read I bet he would do an amazing job but again it wasn’t keeping me on the edge of suspense and there was nothing other then my conscious of feeling guilty of not finishing a book all the way through that kept me going and due to the reviews that promised a good read I decided not to give up at the 40%

Now if you enjoy crime books then this may be a good read for you.

I cannot rate this book currently as I am in the middle of a TOTAL MELTDOWN because I just read 300+ pages of this FICTIONAL NOVEL fully convinced it was TRUE crime. IT IS NOT

The other day I read one great review of this book and realized I had yet to read it. I picked this book up and a day later I was finished! It is the kind of book you can read in one go! Chasing the Boogeyman is a style of book I really enjoy- a horror novel masquerading as true crime. The best part of fiction true crime is that the author can craft the story in a way that real life never allows, because the reality is that there aren't always answers to every question. I so appreciated the photos at the end of every chapter because it really blurred the lines between fiction and fact.

Thanks to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the ARC!
dark mysterious tense fast-paced

This was written so vastly different from other books I have read, I kept having to remind myself it was a true work of fiction and not a real true crime novel. Chizmar did an amazing job of immersing the reader into 1988 Edgewood, MD. I am immediately starting Becoming the Boogeyman.

This is a fabulous work of fiction that I kept having to remind myself was in fact not a true crime novel. Chizmar takes experiences and places from his childhood and weaves them throughout the book making the story seem eerily real. Told in the same vein as other true crime novels, #CHASINGTHEBOOGEYMAN, is peppered with police records, interviews, newspaper reports that will have you invested in what’s going to happen next and if the boogeyman gets caught! ⁣
