We're ghosts, George. Ghosts in a twenty-first century ghost town."

The premise of Megan Freeman's Alone is phenomenal. That and the gorgeous cover art convinced me to purchase the book straightaway after hearing about it. However, I found the book largely disappointing. Though the beginning was gripping, the plot became heavily redundant and repetitive. While I can imagine that is part of the point of a story about going through seasons in complete isolation, each repeated reflection or incident did not add to the depth of the character or meaning of her journey. Additionally, the only driving force that kept me reading was the great suspense as to what caused the massive evacuation that starts the conflict. In fact, Maddie wonders about this throughout the book as well. The sudden and brief resolution was disappointing to say the least, and created a number of plot holes and questions that left the book unsatisfying.

Content notes: There is a brief chapter wherein Maddie has her period for the first time. There is graphic animal violence.
A villain character who does not return takes a kitten, wraps it in a towel, and swings it into the side of a car.
That is a gentle retelling of that particular scene.
