An excellent book for kids ages 8-12 (especially reluctant readers!) about a tween who wakes up to find herself alone in the world.

I had high expectations but the ending felt drawn out and forced.

Phenomenal. Verse novels can be hit-or-miss for me, not because I think they don't have value but because they have an impressionistic feel to me and sometimes that works better than others. Here it truly works. Not to mention I love that Freeman has created a rare solo survival story starring a young girl - one who identifies with traditionally femme signifiers, no less! I wish I'd had this book to read as a kid. Books like HATCHET and MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN left me cold because I didn't identify with the protagonist, but I would have eaten this book whole. It's tense, thoughtful, haunting, and beautiful. Is the ending a bit unlikely? Yes. (There's an alternate universe where the book ends with one of the earlier chapters like "Even Still" or "Autumn Fruit.") But Maddie has earned it by the time she gets there.

The end is kind of deceiving. But it’s a really good book, you should read it.
