Maddie wakes up alone after an impromptu getaway to her grandparents' home. She discovers that there was a mandatory evacuation in the middle of the night due to an imminent threat of danger. With only her neighbor's abandoned rottweiler as company, Maddie must learn to survive in the deserted landscape she used to call home. She learns the survival skills she needs to stay alive including raiding neighbor's house and grocery stores as well as breaking into the local library for reading material- to aid in her survival and keep her sane. She starts to wonder if anyone will ever find her as the months pass, wondering if the imminent danger lurks around every corner. Will she ever be found or will she be forced to live out the rest of her existence alone?

I can't keep this book on my library shelves and I can see why. It's middle grades answer to dystopian fiction and it hits the spot!

What a gem! I really enjoyed this story of survival told in verse. Beautifully written, capturing the isolation and loneliness that would have been felt by the main character.

Loved the plot of a girl abandoned and able to survive and thrive on her own. Great focus on both the physical and emotional toll of loneliness.

THIS STORY.

This had me hooked from the very first page. Maddie being a normal 12 year old thrust into responsibility after being left by everyone in her town. All she wanted was some alone time, and she definitely got it.

Written in verse was the best choice because I could feel exactly what Maddie was feeling at all times.

Gorgeous! I recommend this to everyone! What an amazing story!

Best book I read this year!

This was such a cool dystopian Hatchet meets Island of the Blue Dolphins meets twenty first century. Written in verse with beautiful references to verse and literature, it was just gorgeous to read. I loved it!
