This is such an amazing book. Give this to your fans of Hatchet. I didn't want the book to end. Can't wait to read more books by this author.

Girl survives 3 years in a town with only a dog. She doesn't garden, but scavenges canned food from grocery stores. It takes 3 years to discove fruit trees. Some weather events.
It's like Hatchet, only she is in a town with access to lots of stuff, including clean water. Kinda dumb.

Started this at bedtime, but could not put it down and finished late into the night. As a mother, I was horrified by the thought of this situation, but also very impressed with Maddie's resourcefulness!
"When twelve-year-old Maddie hatches a scheme for a secret sleepover with her two best friends, she ends up waking up to a nightmare. She’s alone—left behind in a town that has been mysteriously evacuated and abandoned. With no one to rely on, no power, and no working phone lines or internet access, Maddie slowly learns to survive on her own. Her only companions are a Rottweiler named George and all the books she can read. After a rough start, Maddie learns to trust her own ingenuity and invents clever ways to survive in a place that has been deserted and forgotten. As months pass, she escapes natural disasters, looters, and wild animals. But Maddie’s most formidable enemy is the crushing loneliness she faces every day. Can Maddie’s stubborn will to survive carry her through the most frightening experience of her life?"

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. One of the most thought provoking books I’ve read all year. I will definitely be purchasing this book for my middle school students.
WARNING: If you are sensitive to animal cruelty or animal death, you will want to read with caution. There are several scenes, especially the one with looters, that may bother you. I do believe these scenes are necessary to show the mind set of the main character and why she made certain decisions.

Amazing ~ Powerful ~ Survival
After telling her parents a few little white lies, Maddie sneaks out to her grandparents empty apartment to have a secret sleepover with her friends. Maddie is upset when her friends bail on their plans but she is determined to go through with the sleepover by herself. Then the truly unthinkable happens and everyone in the town is evacuated as Maddie hides confused and terrified. When daylight comes, Maddie is horrified to find herself alone, abandoned with no way of knowing where her family and neighbors went or how to let them know that she was left behind. Through the changing of the seasons, severe weather, natural disasters, and wild animals, Maddie must learn to survive on her own. A modern, urban survival story, perfect for fans of Hatchett, Island of the Blue Dolphin, and Wildfire. Recommended for 5-8th grade.

While I wanted more about one part of this story it was so poetic and I feel met the author's purpose. Definitely a reminder to appreciate and celebrate what and who you have in your life each day.
