I DEVOURED this book. Absolutely loved it. I didn’t realize it was written in verse, but I thought it made the story very unique and engaging.
Tässä on paljon samaa kuin vuoden parhaassa lukukokemuksessani [b:All That’s Left in the World|59108549|All That’s Left in the World|Erik J. Ehdottomasti lukemisen arvoinen!

Megan E. Freeman’s Alone is a stunning novel in verse that weaves a gripping tale of resilience, survival, and loneliness into an unforgettable story aimed at tweens and teens. The writing is exquisite—spare yet deeply evocative, perfectly capturing the raw emotions of Maddie, a 12-year-old girl suddenly left to fend for herself in an abandoned town.
Maddie’s journey is as heart-wrenching as it is inspiring. Her survival is not just about scrounging for food or braving natural disasters but battling the crushing isolation that comes with being completely alone—her only companion a faithful Rottweiler named George. The pacing is taut, and the stakes feel incredibly real; I found myself breathless with worry for Maddie during several intense moments.
The story also holds up a quiet but powerful homage to the importance of libraries and the knowledge they house. Maddie’s reliance on books to guide her survival and offer comfort is a reminder of the irreplaceable value of stories and learning.
While the novel’s premise and execution are undeniably strong, it’s the verse format that elevates Alone into something extraordinary. Freeman’s words cut straight to the heart of Maddie’s experience, capturing her despair, determination, and moments of fleeting joy with precision and grace.
Though the story’s tension had me racing to the end, the beauty of the writing made me want to slow down and savour each page. Alone is both a thrilling survival story and a poignant exploration of the human spirit, making it an essential read for young readers and adults alike.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking a powerful, emotional, and beautifully crafted novel. 4/5 stars.
