I DEVOURED this book. Absolutely loved it. I didn’t realize it was written in verse, but I thought it made the story very unique and engaging.

Alone oli ensimmäinen englanniksi lukemani säeromaani. Teoksen päähenkilö Maddie on 12, kun hänen kotikaupunkinsa (ja ilmeisesti useampi osavaltio) evakuoidaan. Teos menee periaatteessa dystopioiden genreen, vaikka syytä evakuoimiselle ei selkeästi anneta. Teos keskittyy Maddien tarvikkeiden keräämiseen ja selviytymiskamppailuun ankarista talvista ainoana kumppaninaan naapurin George-koira. Wonderful book in verse about a young girl left behind when the city she lives in is evacuated and abandoned due to a threat. I devoured this one! Maddie’s fight for survival was incredible.

The writing is exquisite—spare yet deeply evocative, perfectly capturing the raw emotions of Maddie, a 12-year-old girl suddenly left to fend for herself in an abandoned town.

Maddie’s journey is as heart-wrenching as it is inspiring. Her survival is not just about scrounging for food or braving natural disasters but battling the crushing isolation that comes with being completely alone—her only companion a faithful Rottweiler named George. The pacing is taut, and the stakes feel incredibly real; I found myself breathless with worry for Maddie during several intense moments.

The story also holds up a quiet but powerful homage to the importance of libraries and the knowledge they house. Maddie’s reliance on books to guide her survival and offer comfort is a reminder of the irreplaceable value of stories and learning.
