This book was a quick read for all the right reasons! It is written in verse which sounds fun but can go south really quickly. However, Megan Freeman really brings it home. She is brief when lengthy description would only be tiresome, and turns to prose when the story calls for more explanation. The heroine is likable and engages the reader in her daily struggles both physical and mental as well as her moments of joy and growth. The plot is well paced with danger and adventure threatening just as we are beginning to feel Maddie's monotony. I could've read a hundred more pages, but it ended just when it should.

Alone is a novel in verse that dances on the genre line between adventure and sci-fi dystopian. There is a great unidentified danger in Maddie’s world, and while she is sneaking out and planning a rule-breaking sleepover, the reality she knows suddenly ends. Everyone in her whole area is evacuated for their safety. However, she was left behind since she was not where she said she would be. Will she survive until she is rescued?

It’s hard to imagine that this is a middle grade book with the level of graphic animal cruelty. I wouldn’t allow my middle grader to read this. I started having to skip sections! The point of the story could have been written without this descriptiveness.

“This ordinary yet significant event finds a fissure in the emotional wall I’ve built.”

One quote that sums up my emotions during this whole book. What a beautiful book, written in verse, that brings a modern day spin on many older, well loved children’s books. A story focused on survival when the world disappears and how young Maddie finds a way to conquer every devastating event in her four year journey alone with just George, her former neighbors dog. While I wish it focused some on the disappearing of people, I was overall impressed by how all consuming this story was.

Great middle grade book! Written in prose and in verse so it’s easy to grasp. Kids might feel intimidated by the length of the book, but it reads quickly because of the verse format.

It’s about a young girl who needs to take a break from her family so she creates a plan to spend the night alone, but when she wakes up everyone in her town has been evacuated. Now she and her neighbor’s dog must survive.

I just really enjoyed this book in verse about Maddie and her new companion, George. The nods to classic books and works such as Island of Blue Dolphins and Emily Dickinson were really great and hearing how Maddie navigated her hometown after everyone, but her, is evacuated kept me turning each page to find out how it all ended as quickly as possible - I was hooked!
