If Emily Dickinson is right and hope is a bird perching in my soul then my hope hovers on the verge of flying away at any moment.
Wow. What a breathtaking novel in verse. Kudos to you Ms. Freeman

I wasn't sure how I felt about this book at the beginning, but by the end I had to stop listening to my audiobook so that I could get to the end faster by reading the physical copy of the book I own! Hope above all other things kept me going through this book and I'm so thankful because this is a fantastic read.
I would compare the voice of this book/the main character with The Honest Truth and Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart. Very honest to the young nature of the main character, while not shying away from the difficult situation she finds herself in. If you enjoy survival books like Hatchet, or even in some ways the parts of The Walking Dead where the main characters have to survive the landscape and locate food and shelter, then you will truly love this book!
One day, if I ever find myself in a middle school classroom, I'd love to add this to a survival literature circle unit alongside Hatchet and The Honest Truth. Easily a book I plan to start getting into my student's hands ASAP!

Gripping. Plus, I love that she falls in love with Mary Oliver. And characterizes Billy Collins as "an eleven year-old kid/who lives next door." :-)
This middle grade book is a good option for fans of I Am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall, though I wish the plot included an epilogue with more details about the situation that caused her town to be evacuated as well as an update about Maddie.
I received an ARC of this book written by Megan E. Freeman, and all I can say is WOW! This book is written in verse and it's hard to put down. Once you start reading this story of a young girl (told in her own words) being left alone in a town where everyone else seems to have been evacuated for some unknown reason, you won't be able to put it down!
Maddie is only 12 years old when she finds herself facing a world she could never have imagined. She finds unbelievable strength within herself to survive, and continues to hope that somewhere out there, her parents are still alive and will find her. But will they? Or will she have to learn to depend on herself alone?

I cannot recommend this book enough! WOW! So good! I loved literally ALL of it! Beautiful writing, spunky female protagonist who kicks ass! Completely appropriate for middle school students while still being appealing to older kids and even adults. Perfection!
This is the first novel written in verse that I’ve physically read. I’ve listened to a few but had been apprehensive about reading one. Boy was I wrong. This book was incredible. A survival story set in an American town that has been suddenly evacuated, leaving behind Maddie. She had always been told to stay out when you’re lost, so that’s what she does, with George a Rottweiler for company. The writing is so tense and descriptive that it was hard to stop reading at times. She faces fires, flood, looters and illness alongside crippling loneliness. A book I would recommend to anyone.
