I listened to this and found the narrator quite irritating, so that might have clouded my opinion.
For a young reader the story is perhaps interesting - 12 year old girl left behind after mass evacuation has to survive alone for 2 years.

I really wanted to love this book for my classroom library because I’ve seen it recommended for middle grade students so many places.

I loved the general story and felt like readers who enjoy Hatchet or similar survival stories could enjoy this one, but it just felt…pointless? The ending was rushed and not a lot of plot happening. I would have loved to know more about what was happening in the background for more of the dystopian elements. I did love the “big picture” questions she grapples with and the way poetry inspires her at the end.

Classroom library:
Language: multiple hells, damn, ass
Content: mention of animals decomposing/being left behind, kitten murder by looters, mention of first period

Alone is the story of a girl who, after concocting a plan to stay the night alone at her grandparents' empty condo, is abandoned by everyone in the town when a disaster forces an evacuation. Maddie goes from pre-teen to teen in an empty city and not only has to learn to deal with personal changes, but teaches herself to survive. This will be a quick and engrossing read for any reader, but particularly for those in middle grade. I would recommend that parents read this with teens because many of the issues Maddie deals with are great conversation starters. I will definitely be purchasing Alone by Megan Freeman for my middle school AND personal libraries!
