Took about three hours to read from start to finish. Was a different reading experience as it is in verse. But I’d rather enjoyed it.

When Maddie is left behind unexpectedly amid an emergency evacuation, she realizes she's truly alone: nobody is coming back to save her. It's just her and her neighbor's dog who must learn to survive. They scavenge houses for bottled water and preserved foods. They break into the library to learn more about survival skills. They avoid looters, lightning, and a flood.

This book is broken up into Maddie learning to accept what has happened: she grieves, she denies, she yearns--but only when she truly accepts that this is her life now and she discovers poetry can she enjoy the little things that truly make up being alive.

I also thought she was going to venture out to try to find her parents, but she stays put: after all, that's what we're supposed to do when we're lost.
