When I picked up this book, I knew nothing about it other than it was on a reading list that I was working through. It's kind of a big book (401 pages), but it is written in verse, making it much faster to read. From the cover, I surmised that it was probably a story about a young girl who gets lost while hiking with her dog. Later, to be sure I wasn't missing anything, I asked several other people who had not read the book what they thought it was about, based on the cover, because it bothered me so much. We were all similar in our thinking. It's a nice cover!

The story, or at least its premise, is much more dark. Maddie, our main character, is torn between her divorced parents, and wants a break from the different rules in both houses. Her grandparents, who are snowbirds, have an apartment in town, and Maddie has access to the keys, so she plans a secret sleepover with friends. In a twist of fate, her friends have to back out of the sleepover, and while Maddie is enjoying a few rule-breaking hours alone (think Twinkies and frozen pizza), the entire town is evacuated, due to some mysterious "imminent threat" -- and Maddie is left behind, alone.

The story is kind of panicky in nature -- because where did they all go? What was the "imminent threat" and is Maddie in danger? When will anyone be back for her? How will she survive?

But the writing never goes too far, and Maddie realizes she has to figure it all out, day by day, step by step. Soon, she starts to plan for the seasons, moving her "home base" as needed, gathering supplies, and so forth. Sometimes she faces heightened dangers she could not have predicted or planned for, but luckily, Maddie scrapes through each one.

Overall, I liked the theme that kids can do hard things, and they get through tougher situations than they might be able to imagine. The idea of being cut off from the world is not completely foreign to us, after going through a pandemic -- Maddie's situation is just a little more extreme. There are many points for discussion and exploration, making this one a good group read or book club selection. The story was just a little different than what I expected, so enjoying it was a happy discovery.

This was a very riveting story. I’ve always liked books about survival, but this one I appreciated a little especially as a middle grade book because the book spends the majority of the time talking about Maddie’s struggle with being alone, and the grief she feels at everything she’s lost not just other people who’s fates she’s unaware of, but her future, the things she could be doing, and everything tied up in the modern world. Especially as this book takes course over several years, so you really feel how the loneliness is killing her. My only complaint is the novel ends a bit abruptly, however not before resolving a sort of character arc for her.
