Interestingly written! Definitely jumping straight into Away, to try and understand what was meant to be going on.

This book spans the length of nearly four years. And let me tell you, I could not live for that long ALONE. Of course, God would be with me, which is one person Maddie seemed to lack, but other than that I'd be alone. This novel was written in verse, so it wasn't a typical read. I didn't read this aloud, so perhaps that was one of the reasons it read choppily. If you don't know what verse is, here's an excerpt:

“I don't want to waste
drinking water
but I find a case of red wine
in the basement.”

However, because the pages were not filled to their maximum capacity it could be read at a more rapid pace than a typical novel. Therefore, it was an easy read.

Negative Content:

Three D words
Four “what the H-ll” exclamations
One @ss word
Mentions of swearing and cursing
Insults such as "idiot” and “stupid”
Crap and Holy crap were used
God's name was used in vain at least once.

Other:

- Brief section titled "Had to Happen” about Maddie's first period. It was mostly her wishing for her mom and wondering if her friends had gone through it yet.
- Mentions multiple times that she should be thinking about kissing someone, (among other things), instead of survival.
- Animal abuse: a kitten is killed violently.

The swear words and using God's name in vain gave me the most reason to drop my rating. I'm not one for swearing to be spelled out in books. Squeaky clean is my thing. I can deal with the use of “idiot” and “stupid” and other petty insults like that in my books, but that's the extent.

There were also a couple of remarks that rubbed me the wrong way, the first one being because those three figures were lumped in the same category. The second one I simply didn't know what I thought. It's giving Frankenstein book vibes now that I think about it.

I liked the vibes of this and the relationship Maddie had with the dog. The pacing and the ending were just too much suspending disbelief for me.

This book was read in school where I’m a Paraprofessional and I really enjoyed it though I was a bit put off by how the character Maddie acted when she found out her brothers were born through IVF.
