I don't read a lot of plays, but I really enjoyed this way. It is really intense and emotional and sad, but also really funny! Funny in that dark way, in that self-reflective way. Walter pissed me off, and as a black woman, it was interesting and all too real to read into the race and gender politics at play between him and the women in his life, Mama, Ruth, and Beneatha.

This play is a classic for a reason.  This tells a story that is often overlooked or pushed to the margins.  The family's struggle in the "Promise Land" is not the exception but the norm that many found themselves in when they left the South for the honeyed lands of the North.  They still held mostly menial jobs such as chaueffers, kitchen staff, or domestics that carried very little income.  Redline neighbors were also very common and a family that dared to try to cross that line was in for a rough time.  That being said their are triggers aplenty with abortion, alchoholism, racism, and dsyfunctional family life just being the tip of the iceberg.
