Such a great book! It is the 1890's and Lou and her cousin Dacia leave the debutante life in New York City to visit their family in Romania where a dark family secret awaits them. Shape shifting, romance, mystery and intrigue await in this story. Draculas, bats, wolves and mist. High society, scandal, love and loss. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it. Totally fun read!
I absolutely loved this book! I was so engrossed in this book. It basically consumed every spare minute I've had for the past four days.
I absolutely can't wait to jump into more Jessica Day George. I will be buying the rest of her novels very soon indeed!
I need a sequel.... Like right now!

Rating: 3/5 stars
My review of this book changed drastically from the beginning to the end. All over it was fairly good. The writing style was far too basic for my tastes, and that resulted in providing a very limited mental image, which constantly annoyed me, but the plot and characters were very fulfilling, if that makes sense. It felt a lot like a movie script, almost - I couldn't see the settings or visuals, but I got the general idea of it all. It reminds me of "Eclipse" by Stephenie Meyer without the (extremely cringy) romance. It had all of those good action bits. While I didn't like her writing style, the plot was expanded upon beautifully, and it had the character development akin to the "ACOTAR" series by Sarah J. Maas. The characters were going through a very traumatic event, and the book properly described the psychological toll it was taking on them. Some miscellaneous problems were that I experienced of eyes-glazing-over when I read the book. Like, numerous times. It was extremely frustrating. Also, the end battle scene was a big case of "Why won't you just die?"
All in all, it was a very decent read, and I'm sure the story will stick with me for a bit. I think that if there was better editing and a few more drafts of this, it could have been amazing. A decent start to the reading year.
P.S. On page 333, there was a grammatical/spelling error, but that was the only one I found, which is way less than Harry Potter.

I love the concept and the 2 main characters so much, Dacia and Lou. They are strong and independent young women. The concept of this book is intriguing and extremely interesting, the wing, the claw and the smoke. However, I felt like the build up is so powerful and I was so anticipating to see how it ends, but the ending was not as satisfied as I was hoping for, but overall it was great fun and very fast-paced book. I love it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Refreshing "take" on the legend of Dracula with lovely characters. Can't wait for the sequel!

Two American cousins are traveling to Romania to meet their family. Little do they know that their family has a long kept secret and the girls are central to the secret. The story is told in journal entries and story telling from both girls point of view. The story is a quick read with great writing and fun characters. There is a little bit of romance, a little bit of action, and a little bit of humor. Fans of fairy tales and paranormal stories will enjoy this read.
