I don’t understand all the 4 and 5 star reviews. I really didn’t enjoy this book. Took a long time to get into it and I still didn’t like it. Nearly DNF‘d it.
I was hooked on this book. It did take me a restart to get through the first chapter but after that I couldn't stop! I particularly recommend the audio book for this one (I read and listened to it), the narrator was superb!

Thorn expands on its fairy tale origins quite significantly, but there are fun elements that pull us back into the old tale. My personal favorite is the Wind and its portrayal (no spoilers here though!). Another carryover from the fairytale is the horse Falada, here a member of an ancient race.
From there, though, the world-building diverges, leaving us in the rich world of Khanani’s own making. Here there are thieves ruling the city while dangerous “snatchers” abound, and the poor suffer while courtiers count their riches and spar with words. In her new lowly position, Alyrra is well-placed to broaden her worldview from that of a sheltered princess.
There is action and magic and character growth, however, the book does have a slow burn, so keep that in mind.

Really enjoyed this version of the Goose Girl. Shannon Hale’s version is a lot lighter with the content than this version. Both are great versions of the story.
This version there were several other themes throughout such as violence against women (there is a rape but it is mentioned- nothing detailed) what constitutes justice, etc. Very well written and love how our heroine found her voice and became stronger through her journey. I will continue with the series.

Not the reading I had expected... At all.
This book intrigued me from the moment I saw it. It took me some time to get to it - as it seems to happen often these days - but wow! And it's not even a sudden change, looking back, I just wasn't looking at the picture right until it hit me smack in the face!
By the time I realized just how far from what I had imagined the story really was, I could not stop. Please understand that this point, for me, was a bit before the middle of the book and it happened at 5am.
Believing this should be enough for you to see how I enjoyed this story, I leave you with an important question as I often do:
Given the choice, will you run or take your stand?

“This is how you survive: one breath to the next, refusing each thought as it comes to you. This is how you get through the worst of things.” -Princess Alyrra
This book made me sooo mad if it weren’t mine i could have punched it out of mere rage- i think it was successful at making me feel all those mini rages while reading it.
Trigger warning: rape and animal cruelty.

This is a retelling of the classic story the Goose Girl (which I haven’t read) and really enjoyed it! Well written, great characters and refreshing story.
Princess Alyrra is smart and super likeable. All the characters felt well fleshed out. I particularly liked the talking horse (which I thought was done really well), Prince Kestrin and the Red Hawk.
There were some sad parts that got me choked up. Alyrra had such a great journey though and I was rooting for her to come out on top. I thought the topic of abuse and manipulation was addressed really well by the author. Alyrra’s experiences affected her and how she approached relationships. I really connected with her.
A great read and a perfect standalone. Looking forward to the companion novel.

Awesome underrated book! This is a retelling of the goose girl fairytale. I loved the heroine’s quiet strength, as well as her journey to find her voice and step up for those she cares about and produce change in her community. Rating 4 stars
