I sped through this one. It grabbed me from the start, I flew through it, and wanted more when I was done. Those are all the hallmarks of a good book in my opinion. If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, it’s well worth the read and I’m looking forward to the next installment.

This reminded me of how much I love urban fantasy. Sam was a hilarious, sympathetic heroine. She'd gone through a ridiculous amount of trauma, and this story just brought more her way. She grew a lot though, changing from a loner who hid from things to someone who acknowledged that she had friends and was a fighter. I loved Owen, Dave, and her love interest, Clive. The action and romance plots were nicely interwoven, and the world was intriguing, with all manner of creatures. This was pretty dark, but it was also a quick read that was fun in places, with a romance I liked a lot. Definitely continuing this series.
Vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, dragons, selkie...I think there was a mermaid.
There is a good story buried somewhere in this book but it gets lost in a cacophony of distractions. Strip away some of that and focus on the central story and I can see this being 4 Stars, maybe even 5 Stars.
The love story between Sam and Clive was probably about right if you come to the book looking for Paranormal Romance, but it is a bit too much if you are after an Urban Fantasy.
Overall it was OK and I might read book two at some point in the future. Not sure yet.

Characters: Clive and Sam
My thoughts: The writing doesn’t assume the reader is dumb, so I appreciate that quality. I liked the cross-species relationship. It was slightly above average. It’ll was not blown away, but it was better than a lot of the “just fine” books.
Best Side Character: Coco. I ❤️ dragons.
What lines/passages stood out so much I stopped to write them down:
“Sometimes the family tree must be pruned to ensure it flourishes in the future.”
Readers should know:
- Trigger warnings: discussion of SA, PTSD, torture, violence
- This is my first paranormal book with a surprise kraken.
- I need more information on the logistics of the selkie bar entrance.
- There were a few timeline and inconsistency issues.
Would I spend $12 or an audible credit on it (again)? Maybe.
