Very, very quick, entertaining read.

On the night of her seventeenth birthday Sofia Claremont is kidnapped and brought to The Shade, an island where the sun does not shine, and from then on it is to serve the most powerful existing vampire circles as a slave.

When Derek Novak, the Prince of the vampires awakens from a century lasting sleep, he chooses her as his personal slave. Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is at his side and does everything in her power to get him to like her and to survive. After a time they fall in love with each other which sealed their fate unfolds.

Although the book is written in English (I usually read in German), it's pretty easy to understand. The writing style was quite good, but I was not carried away completely.

The characters are fairly well implemented. I especially liked Derek and Sofia very much, but also Derek's brother Lucas or Sofia's friend Ben.
What I also particularly like is that the story is told from multiple perspectives. It always alternates between Sofia and Derek.

I liked the book, even if Sofia's abduction at the beginning made me a little skeptical that it would really please me. But now I am glad to have read it, because even if it is a book with vampires again, it's certainly not like Twilight, although there are some parallels. As I said, I liked very much Derek and I hope that there will be a happy ending for him in the other bands.

Conclusion

All in all it was a nice story, in my opinion, but still could have been a little better.

Finally, I would like to thank you once again at Bella Forrest, for that she sent me this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

On Sophie Claremont’s seventeenth birthday her whole world changes.

Her best friend, Ben, forgets her special day and goes out with Claudia. Bella is so upset she goes for a walk on the beach and meets Lucas. Lucas kidnaps her and makes her part of the harem for Prince Derek, Lucas brother. Derek is the strongest vampire known to the world of vampires and head of his coven.

A Shade of Vampires is a different take on the vampire world. From the very first chapter I was hooked on the romance and the excitement. This young adult paranormal book took the vampire world to a place most books I have read about vampires have not. The island setting made sense to me. The vampires in the book could not have lived with regular humans in the real world. It showed the vampires as the predator and the humans as the prey. This was a new viewpoint to me. Most books about vampires I have read they just want to fit in.

The relationship between Sophie and Derek was intense. Derek was the prince, head of a coven of deadly vampires, and he fell for and protects the human girl Sophie. Sophie is an innocent seventeen year old slave to a vampire who is hundreds of years old. She does what she can to keep Derek’s primal instincts in check, I enjoyed watching Derek struggle to not take advantage of the situation.

This short story was perfect. Bella Forest wrote a vampire story with a unique look at their world. I truly enjoyed it and know when book 2 is available I shall be one of the first in line to get my copy.

(an extra point bc it’s camp). it’s not good but it’s certainly entertaining. do I fuck around and read all 90 books in the series??

Well...THAT was unexpected

Anywho, I revived this book from the this wonderful author in return for an honest review. All I gotta say is that this book was AWESOME and how I said before I was NOT expecting that in the end. All I would of liked a bit more was that she would of described the characters a little more, but even without a detailed description it was fine. The characters developments were good and Sofia as a character was relatable in some aspects. Hopefully since I haven't read the other books that I see more of Cora. Over all the book was great.

First of all, I have to thank Bella Forrest for providing me with a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I'm rating it with 3 stars due to lots of reasons, but the main ones are (Might contain a few spoilers):

- I'm a native spanish speaking person, which may or maynot have had an influence on me when it comes to reading in english (not because I didn't understand it, but because I have been raised to be a grammar nazi due to the rules I had to learn in order to become fluent in english, even if I don't write / speak it perfectly). For that reason, when I saw the same word in the same paragraph, sometimes even in the same sentence, it just felt like it wasn't right. I wouldn't mind if It happened once or twice in the book, but truth be told, I saw it quite often while reading it.

- It is a book about vampires, but leave aside the fact that the people surrounding Sophia have fangs and try to attack her in specific moments of the story and we know nothing about them. Something I love when I read a fantasy book is that you get to see the point of view of the author about that kind of creatures. For example, you might think a vampire is dangerous, but maybe the author reflects them like creatures as tamed as puppies.

- The love-at-first-sight thing involving vampires and human is going to remind EVERYONE about Twilight. No matter if it's completly different, if it involves a vampire - who hates himself, just like Edward - and a young woman - a human being who think she's invisible but gains the vampire's favour.- a lot of people are going to think about Twilight when reading it. It's just imposible not to.

- I don't know if it was because of its shortness or because of how it was writen, but it felt as if it was too slow. The whole book happens during a week? a week and a half, maybe? I was begging for something - besides Lucas' behaviour towards Sophia - to happen. Once the meeting between Derek and Sophia happens action is pretty much over for me. Days go by in The Shade and yes, the relationship between the two main characters evolves - in which I think is way too little time - but nothing happens. Lucas' attack, something the author could've worked with better, is left aside due to Sophia not talking about it and Derek knowing perfectly who had it been but doing nothing. I kept on reading but the ending was near and barely a thing happened. When Ben is found there the conflict started and let's not talk about the latest incident with Lucas. That's when I felt the book was really starting and yet it was almost the ending, which brings me to the next point.

- THAT ENDING. Clearly made like that so that people NEED to read the second book. Knowing that the relationship between Derek and Sophia is actually crucial to the story I just hope Bella doesn't treat it as the most important point in the book. After finishing the first one you expect the second to hold the battle. Though I have a feeling in the second book they'll reveal Ben's love for Sophia and another man will be added to the fight. (Note: I haven't even read the plot of the next book so I'm just making this up.)

I guess I'm listing what I didn't like that much about the book, but I actually enjoyed it. It's interesting just not as much as some other I read in the past. I think I needed a longer book with everything that I felt was missing (the culture, better grammar and maybe a more complicated love story if that's what she wanted to write the book about).

I didn't hate the characters as some of the people reviewing before me did. Lucas was a well built character, even if I hate his behaviour / him. Derek wasn't as bad either, he had a reason to hate his kind, unlike Edward Cullen. Sophia... she looked a bit of a Mary Sue to me, but I've seen way worse. About the rest of the characters, I don't feel like we know enough of them so that we can discuss the way they're built.

From the moment I read the description I expected a lot more than what I found once I read it. I liked A Shade of Vampire, but I think it's just another book about vampires.

I received this book in my email a LONG time ago and as some ebooks do they get lost in the pile of physical books toppling off your shelf since they are sitting on ereaders in the abyss. Luckily I found this one before a readathon and was DETERMINED to get to read it. It took no time at all for me to be hooked. I love vampire books, I always have, even before... well you know the series... anywho this book was wonderful.

Let's start with the plot - girl gets taken to an island of vampires where she is bound to serve the prince there - sound good so far? gets better - prince isn't as beastly as the rest and there is hope for her. (Swoon).
Now this doesn't mean that there aren't your fair share of 'oh crap did that just happen moments' because there were a good amount of them.

Here is where I would like to say that is book may be a trigger - there are scenes that do not depict rape but get pretty close and that can be hard for people to read - I know that - so there is your warning.

Sofia is the teen that is taken and she is taken as a gift for the prince, only to find that he isn't really all that bad. She is strong and confident but also does a good job playing the helpless - although I don't think enough at times.

I really enjoyed this book, the plot had wonderful ups and downs, I liked and hated characters, and I wanted more, OH SO MUCH more! I hope to read the rest of this series as soon as time allows.

Wow! I'm downloading the second book as soon as I'm finished with this review. I thought that I'd read every angle of every vampire story but I was so wrong.

This book had so much potential, honestly, the basis of the story gives for a fantastic story, but it was horrible.
I'm usually the kind of person that finds something good with every book, but this one just wasn't it.
The writing was horrible, the descriptions of what was happening were just sort of stupid. So for this and other reasons I give this book a 2 stars.

Ehhh, it was ok. Better than most YA I pick up. I borrowed it from Kindle Lender's Library so it was worth the free price tag! The book left me hanging. I literally thought the whole thing must not have downloaded! I'm all for a hanging end but hate abrupt ones. I will read the next one next month when I can borrow again. The world the book takes place in interesting. Very short, one- night read.
