I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review
Even though it’s a short and light read and I couldn’t fully connect with the characters, there is something with this book. Something that made me keep on going, loving every moment of it. It’s written in such a way that has me intrigued. I liked how in this book the vampires are more brutal, closer to the evil beings they once were for our ancestors. Cause you won’t find any “vegetarian” vampires, or soft, docile ones. Nope, we’re back to the beginning when vampires were at the top of the food chain and humans their food. Theirs to do with what they wanted. And it is a delightfully refreshing way to look at vampires.
The story is told through both Derek and Sofia. As I said I had some trouble connecting with the both of them. I just could not feel any depth in their emotions. My heart did not race in my throat and I could not bring myself to truly care. Other then that it was fun reading about them. Sofia started out as a true wallflower, but she gradually became more comfortable and had no problem with telling what she felt. And it was great to see her grow like that.
Derek…. The verdict is still out for him. I was not able to fully make up my mind. He’s much harder to decipher than Sofia. There’s so much history between him and the other vampires. I only touched the tip of the iceberg, but I’m curious to what is underneath the surface. What secrets he has. For now he is an OK vampire, a bit different from the rest. And a knight in shining armor for Sofia. I look forward to see how their relationship develops ^^

Conclusion
4 HEARTS. There’s just something with this book that will make you like it. Even thought it’s a short story and the emotions the characters experience don’t really come across. The not so fluffy vampires also help add to the appeal. Sofia, a blossoming wallflower and Derek, an unusual vampire make the magic complete. I look forward to the next installment!
Amazing
This was such a gripping read! I definitely didn't expect this book to mean so much to me or have such an impact. I loved and can't wait to read the next

Read this while bread dough was rising today. Nothing amazing, but it was a pretty short story and kind of fun (if you like vampy stuff)
You will either love this book or hate it.
I loved it! I picked it up and didn't put it down until I finished it.
Fun, quick and easy read.

Series overview
I’m coming back to do a review on the first book of this series but it’s more of a multiple book overview. I absolutely love a shade of vampire, I’ve read about 60 books from the series but I couldn’t continue after that. After a while it just gets (slightly) repetitive. I love the writing and I love the characters. But after soooo many books, I’m ready for something different from the author. Obviously it’s good if I read 60 of the books lol every 8 to 10 books is a new generation all in the same family from “the shade” so technically you could just read one set and be done or continue on and read all the “generations”. It really is another world that you will get lost in and I do plan to pick up where I left off eventually, I just needed a break because I found myself skimming and I don’t want to half ass these books because they really are great. There’s so many different types of species, many romances, suspense, nail biting, it’s all there. The author really does a wonderful job. So if you’re looking for a huge series to binge read or read a set and then read another set later so you don’t get burned out like I did, definitelyyyy start this series.

No es que este libro sea malo malísimo, es que, a pesar de lo corto que es, se me hizo aburrido, quizás por lo predecible. No me interesa nada continuar la saga.
I really shouldn't have, but I did like the book.
Well this book came highly recommended to me and I have to say that I did really enjoy it! I liked Sofia and that she tried so hard not to be afraid and to just deal with being at The Shade. It was a little shorter than I would have liked it especially because I felt like I really didn't get to know Sofia at all in the beginning. It was kind of like "oh hey, here's this girl. BAM VAMPIRES" It didn't really detract from the story I was just surprised because I was almost wondering well why should I care about Sofia. I don't know her! That's really my only complaint other than the overall shortness of the story but it was still really good. Now, onto the parts I love love loved! Derek! OMG holy hotness batman! Derek was just so sweet and I loved how he tried so hard, I love a vampire who doesn't want to be a vampire! I'm dying to know what's going to happen next, it's unfathomable to me to have Sofia be without Derek. I'm so nervous to read the next one(I'm going to buy it right now). I hated Lucas, I feel like it's going to be one of those things where he tries to redeem himself and I don't want him too! I don't want to feel sympathy for that creep he can definitely crawl into a hole somewhere and die. I also have a feeling that sending Sofia away is not going to stop Lucas. He is just going to get sneaky and get to her. Especially now that she's going to be back in the real world. Overall 4 stars and that's only because I was disappointed that it wasn't longer. Going to buy the next one now!

A friend asked me on Facebook if I had read this book because it is apparently really popular. I had never heard of it, but after reading the description I knew I had to give it a shot. C'mon, a vampire island? This is right up my alley.
Sofia was pretty much abandoned by her parents when she was young. Her mother went crazy and her father checked out after her mother was gone. Sofia was left to live with family friends, The Hudsons. As Sofia grows up, her best friend becomes Ben Hudson. He is the only person who understands and can talk her off the ledge when she has one of her panic attacks (which makes her fear she is more like her mother than she would admit). Ben has always been her rock and that constant in her life to keep her grounded. Even though he is star of the football team and super handsome, he has always put their friendship first. Right before Sofia turns 17, she realizes that this is now or never when it comes to telling Ben how she really feels about him. She can't sit back anymore and watch him date other girls when she cares so deeply for him. The family takes a trip to Cancun and Sofia decides that on the beach their first night is the perfect opportunity to tell him. That is until a bikini glad blonde comes running up to Ben and takes him away. Sofia is heartbroken, and even more so when Ben forgets her birthday a few days later. He comes into her room late that night to apologize, and Sofia can't stand it anymore. She runs away from him and away from everything she wants to tell him. She runs as fast as she can to the beach and takes a late night dip in the ocean to wash it all away. When she realizes how late it is, she decides to head back to the resort. She is attacked on her way back by a devastatingly handsome stranger who pops her in the neck with a needle.
When Sofia wakes up, she is no where near Cancun. She is in shackles and ready to be assaulted by her captor. Her captors take Sofia in shackles with them to collect other girls her age from cells. They aren't told why they are there or what is going to happen to them. They are taken to a Roman spa to be bathed and pampered. They are all puzzled as to what is going on and what is going to happen to them. It is shortly after that they realize that they have been put together to form Vampire Prince Derek Novak's harem. Derek is about to wake from a four hundred year slumber and he needs to have the best of the best ready to serve him at his beckoning call. However when Derek wakes, the only thing he sees is Sofia. Something about her draws him in. His hunger for her blood almost overpowers him, but something about her makes him not want to hurt her. He decides that he doesn't know what it is about this girl, but he wants her with him at all times. It baffles all the vampires around them that the prince is so overcome with this human girl. Sofia doesn't know why he is so enthralled with her either, but she soon realizes her only way to survive on this island is by staying close to Derek.
So you know how most people hate insta-love? Like it really really annoys them? Are you one of those people? THEN DON'T READ THIS. Holy cow, this was one of the strongest and quickest insta-loves that I have read about. This dude goes from being a GTFO sleep for four centuries to trying to sup this human girl that he knows nothing about. He's ready to cut out everyone from his life if they hurt her. Derek is super thirsty (no pun intended because you know... BLOOD.. THIRSTY... GET IT) for Sofia, and eventually she starts feeling the same thing. Seriously this chick goes from fearing for her life on this island to feeling like her home is with him. of here.
I was into it for the first half of the book. We're finding out all about this weird vampy island and this hot prince who is really a tortured soul and doesn't want to hurt anyone. The last half (especially the last quarter) had me rolling my eyes SO HARD. The "twist" at the end made me throw down my phone in exasperation. Seriously, give me a break.
What I really don't get is how this series is like twenty two freaking books long. Ummm no. I spent .99 on the first book and that's about all the investment I am willing to make. The series is free on Kindle Unlimited so if you are really jonesing to see what's going on, you have that option. I wouldn't recommend it though.
