Ohh, this book is beautiful. I have not read much Polish folklore, and this was a beautiful introduction to the lore and the depth of the mythology. Liska is immediately endearing, and while not necessarily likeable at first (about as likeable as a skittish deer on the side of the road, pretty but you’re more worried about it getting spooked than anything), she is intriguing and pitiful in a way that makes you want to crack her open and learn her. The Lecszy is exactly what you hope: mysterious and angry and ethereal, otherworldly as only a forest lord can be. All of the side characters are well fleshed out, and you root for them all, spirits and human alike. This book made me cry more often than laugh, but it was lyrical and vibrant. I want to live in the Driada, as foolish as that may be.

Definitely see why people say it gives howls moving castle vibes but I’d also say a little beauty and the beast too. Two amazing stories but just really wasn’t a fan of this version or the characters in it. I also really struggled to stay interested and it took me a lot longer to get through then most my reads. The house spirit, Yaga, is the only character I grew any attachment too (loved her!). But she was a side character that really didn’t really affected the plot. Not a bad read but just not super captivating.
