A cautionary tale against the dangerous influence that rather circumspect characters in positions of power and authority can have on impressionable young minds!

Beautiful, concise, poetic, empathetic, absorbing, clever writing. I knew this story already because I was in an amateur production of the play, with a very small part, when I was a teenager. I had forgotten the ins and outs of the plot and I'm sure I did not understand, then, a lot of the references and subtleties.

Although very short, and although Spark makes frequent (and effective) use of repetition, there is an awful lot crammed into this novel. Miss Jean Brodie herself, of course, is one of the most memorable characters in English literature. The other characters all spark with life and individuality, too, and Edinburgh and the historical period are also so well described that they are tangible. Spark navigates her non-chronological telling masterfully.

Was this my fav writing style? No. Did the characters grip me, casuing visceral bodily reactions? Yes.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is ahead of it's time; Miss Brodie embodies "delulu is the solulu," causing and leaving chaos in her wake. Don't be fooled, I did not like a single chatacter... least of all Miss fricking Jean Brodie. She's categorically the worst. In some ways, I disliked the others because they were all marked by Miss Brodie in their own way. But are they really to blame?? Not the children at least....

I will die on a hill for the fact that The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie walked so that Dead Society could run.

**Do not expect anything wholesome from this book though!**
