After just a few sentences, I was already captivated by the story of this charismatic, manipulative teacher and her favorite students. The slim little book addresses a variety of topics: the role of authority figures in the lives of their charges, group dynamics and individuality, predestination and free will, instinct and rational insight, sexuality, religion, fascism....
Miss Jean Brodie is an unconventional teacher who defies the prescribed curriculum with careless disregard. Instead of history or grammar, she talks of her glamorous life - her travels, her love life, and the personal "prime" she sacrifices for her students. She deftly molds those she deems worthy. Her extraordinary, sometimes even radical ideas certainly broaden the horizons of her girls; then the unconditional loyalty she demands collects the debt with interest. In her small world, Miss Jean Brodie is the measure and center of all things.
Her student Sandy has an amazingly clear view of these manipulative tactics, instinctively understanding that the simple-minded Mary is being deliberately made a scapegoat to give the group a controllable outlet for frustrations and doubts. At one point, she equates this instrumentalization of peer pressure and enemy stereotypes with the way despots like Mussolini bind followers to themselves - and indeed, Miss Brodie is the latter's ardent supporter.
Even the humiliated and scolded Mary, however, cannot break away from this influence, and years later still considers her time with Miss Brodie the happiest of her life. In various ways, each of the girls seems crippled in their emotional development.

hard to get into and follow but once you latch on it’s a good story and a somewhat surprising but expected reveal at the end, cute light read especially during the fall
