Really liked this book until I didn’t. The ending is just. Not for me

Lilting and twisting prose, really felt like my brains were melting out of my ears but in a good way. I thought the novel within a novel framing was fantastic. In some ways I felt too dumb for this book. It dragged a bit for me in the middle and felt unsatisfying in the end but I bumped up a quarter star because I know I'm wrong for thinking the ending wasn't genius, and it just gave me a low, skin-deep anxiety.

Weird, ominous, and beautifully written. This is science fiction, and takes place in a world where things just disappear and people quickly forget about their existence. Birds, ferries, hats disappear, and people adjust their lives to accommodate. The Memory Police are there to ensure things actually disappear, and they are Stasi-esque in their efficiency. My heart is still racing after finishing the book.

Well if you are in the right contemplative mood, then this draws you in the inexorable decline. However most of the times, I kept anticipating something more interesting to happen with no payoff.
