Begins as an unnerving story and finishes as a truly disturbing one.

Beautiful spare writing. So much of the early part of the book, and all encounters with the Memory Police are so Kafka-esque. The characters, though, do not rage against their circumstances but slip into the horror of their situation as a malaise. They are naive and uncomfortably oblivious like Murakami’s men. By the end I felt moved in the same way as I did after Yan Lianke’s Four Books. This will haunt me, and I love Ogawa for that.

Such a fluid, slightly eerie read. The last 4 chapters have so much weight that they bear and it’s lead to some reflection of what we do have even if not physically. Very thought-provoking read, kinda Orwellian, feels like a classic!
