am i allowed to call an orwellian book cutesy? because this book was a bit cutesy. i actually liked that the mundane happinesses of life were present alongside the glaring oppression of big brother — it felt very realistic. at the same time, i enjoyed the symbolism of society slowly melting down. a very interesting read that i will think about for a long time

"When I read your novels, I never imagine that your heart is hollow."

what. the. fuck. i had no idea what was going on most of the time!!! i didn’t think i would really find out, and i didn’t! the novel inside the novel was super cool and some of the passages were really beautiful and memorable (ha ha ha). some of the story drags, surprisingly so for a book under 300 pages.

this sure was an experience.

Loved the concept and the writing, although it was a little slow and repetitive. Makes me feel some type of way

I love Ogawa’s novellas and I think this would have worked for me at <150 pages. Her affectless writing and the slowww escalation of the premise doesn’t scale well to the length of a novel. I loved the first and last 30 pages, but I had to drag myself through the rest of it.
