I don’t know if it’s the author or just the English translations of her work, but this is her second book that didn’t do it for me. The concept, while promising, wasn’t very compelling in execution. I liked some of the situations that the loss in memories prompted—the old man’s connection to the music box was particularly moving, imo—but it just felt like there was something missing. Am I losing memories? My biggest issue was I think the story could’ve been stronger with a different main character. It was frustrating that she protected a guy from the memory police by hiding him at her house (which required him to leave his family and live in harsh conditions), only to go out of her way to attract the attention of the memory police while he was there. It was just silly. I lost interest when that happened. This wasn’t a conscious DNF, but Libby reclaimed it before I finished. In any case, this’ll be the last time I read this author. Not for me.
