Muistipoliisi

Yōko Ogawa

3.77 AVERAGE

The memory police has the feeling of roaming in the head of someone with memory loss and the futility of others and themselves to try to recollect memories of things that are no more than a word and sometimes with an even less existence, like ghosts of things that should've been but no longer are.

There are an overwhelming amount of details in the main story, and a few stories are told by the characters of the book that more or less foreshadow the events later on, some parts of the book are extremely eerie and should be taken with a grain of salt, and the atmosphere is rather suspenceful and sometimes too realistically dystopian.

Afterall we've all lost things we may have no memory of and wouldn't have strong feelings upon remembering their absence.

And lastly there's a huge trigger warning for memory loss and loss as a whole in this book.

I wasn't sure if it was trying to tell us that adapting to authoritarian regimes is natural, or if nostalgia is real... Lots of questions from me. I did like the style though.

I feel empty after finishing this story, Ogawa does a great job of building a world that highlights people's ability to continue on with the new normal under authoritarian regimes. Any hope I had was swiftly crushed in the last few chapters.

My head hurts. My chest hurts. I'm surprised I haven't heard this mentioned more in terms of books that are prescient to our current political climate. Masterful, truly.
