You know how your grandma is supposed to be the person that always has your back and stuffs you with cookies and candy? Well, Mark Towse’s Nana surely isn’t that kind of granny. Her own grandson is afraid to spend the night with her, and he has good reasons.

Nana lives in Newhaven Crescent along with a bunch of other weird old people, and they get together once in a while to play Bingo or whatever it is that old people do. That’s at least what Olly and his mom think and boy, are they wrong.

This book is funny, dark and really gross. Some of the descriptions make me wish I found a youth potion. Maybe Amazon will sell them in the near future. If not, I’ll just have to hope we get a paperboy some time soon around here.

Thanks to the author for the review copy.
dark funny fast-paced

If anyone’s a fan of The Mighty Boosh, you might remember the song ‘nanagedon’, which is the song that kept repeating in my head while I read this novella.

Nana by Mark Towse was a bizarre novella, full of great writing and extreme details (emphasis on extreme.). We follow Olly who’s being forced to stay at his nana’s house for the night while his parents are out, trying to figure out the obstacles of their marriage. What Olly think’s is going to be a boring, uneventful night will become something that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

I was not expecting such a grotesque story that was filled with such dirty mouthed and vulgar old folks. There were so many moments where I just sat stunned at how...unbelievable they were with Olly, and one of the side characters, Alex. It made me uncomfortable. It was disturbing, and that wasn’t even during the main event of the book. There is also humour throughout the book that kept me laughing, and I mean, teary eyed laughing, which I normally don’t get with books. (I obviously had to read the jokes outloud to my partner because he had to also laugh with me.)

Towse really pulled out the big guns for this novella and kept me guessing what the fuck was wrong with the elders of Newhaven Crescent. I was guessing left and right on what was going on, and I really dug what it actually turned out to be. The story is original, it’s very different from a lot of horror novels I've read and was absolutely manky with details.

Thank you to Mark for giving me a copy for an honest review!

Some weird and deranged imagery in here, but it left cold in the end.
