Though I have obviously only read his plays in translation, I have found Ibsen's work to be entirely relevant. This play was no exception, in this audio version of a LA Theater Works production. Dr. Stockmann has discovered an enormous environmental hazard making a town's hot springs dangerous. Unfortunately, the science was ahead of popular understanding, and the possible financial devastation to the town in the wake of the expected scandal brands Stockmann an Enemy of the People. Though the science is much more obvious to the modern reader, the condemnation of a press concerned with popularity over truth, and of business-driven politics still rings true today.

I very much enjoyed the character of Dr. Stockmann. He put up a hell of a fight. Determined and righteous to the end.

I am reviewing the play, but this edition. Sorry, I didn't see the one I read.

I’m absolutely dying to see a production of this transported to modern day America. There are far too many parallels, and it’s unnerving that the story of a whistleblower failing to override corruption and economic priorities still rings so true.
