I took my time with this book due to its format, the story, and the current situation of violence in the US. Also, I wanted to absorb and analyze as much as I could from Solomon's journey into slavery, and be acquainted with a situation I did not endured, but that sadly happened.
I'm going to take some more time to figure out a rating for this book, even when the structure of it gave me a hard time every once in a while. The story still lingers and that's all I can think of right now.
Ps: If you know of a book talking about this subject in the Dominican Republic please send it my way. Will be fully appreciated.

Man. This was an affecting read. The ending in particular almost moved me to tears. Northup's story is as interesting, intriguing, and tragic as any other memoir I've ever read. Ultimately, though, it's about resolve and redemption. The insane amount of detail that Northup was able to remember is astonishing, and his vivid descriptions really work well to pull the reader into the story. The version that I am reviewing is the LSU Press edition, which is heavily annotated with historical research with confirms probably well over 95% of Northup's claims. Truly incredible.
The only reason I deducted one star is because of the prose. They come across as a little stilted in places, especially at the beginning. I notice that this is a common issue that I have with English language writers before the 20th century. The Modernist movement really did wonders for English prose, in my opinion.

A moving and powerful story that portrays the brutal reality of slavery in America with unflinching honesty.

I don't have much to say about this one. I haven't seen the movie that is based on it, so I can't compare the two. It was extremely interesting seeing the experience Solomon went through, and it's incredible to me that we allowed such horrendous things to happen in the past. I suppose it's a reminder that you always need to be conscious of the injustices of the world.
