An extremely heavy read, even remarkably more so for those unfamiliar with the subject, myself included. Born a free man then kidnapped into slavery only to be emancipated 12 years later, Northup was and remained an extraordinarily decent human being, whose hope for liberty had risen above all the utmost desolate moments of bondage. Similarly to Night by Elie Wiesel, I had to, throughout my reading of this memoir, constantly remind myself that they were not some characters from fictions imagined, exaggerated and dramatized to please the public perception. It was what really happened. How inhumanly humans couldtreat each other as portrayed in Northup's personal account left me indeed aghast and appalled, yet the humanity and the dignity of only a few of them to me stood as a beacon light in this black page of history.
The story is thought, emotion and mind provoking. A great insight into the culture of perpetual psychopathy. The author most accurately describes the states of mind and attitudes of the those who are just emotionally blind (Master Ford) and those who are without a doubt full blown psychopaths (Epps household, Tibeats, Burns, etc).
It's heartbreaking and yet still as pertinent today as it was all those years ago. The same bullying, emotional and physical abuse is still with us, just on a more subdued scale. The cruelty is still perpetuating from generation to generation and is lashed out on those who are most helpless.
I think the story is very pertinent to every human being.
I wish this was on my high school or college reading list instead of Pride and Prejudice.

A brutal book about a brutal time in American history. I didn't realize kidnapping of free African Americans in the North and selling them in the South as slaves happened but after reading this book it seems pretty obvious. The English in the book is a little old fashioned but oddly poetic.

Sad but true
I had no idea that this was a true story! Written by the man himself. At first I found the language a bit difficult as this was written in the 1800s but I soon got use to it. I doubt I will read this again which is why I haven’t given 5 stars but I am planning on watching the film later today!

This was an amazing classical book and it's one that describes what it was like to be a slave, the pain, misery, and the toil and how they watch everything and it's heart wrenching and a real classic one that should always be read.
Reading this book for my U.S. History class, I found this narrative extremely powerful and a compelling first hand account about the dehumanization of slavery.
