Devastatingly hard to read sometimes. Grateful we have firsthand accounts like this.

it feels a little inappropriate to give a rating to a true account of slavery. this was an important book that I’m very glad I got around to reading, as it had been sitting on my bookshelf for a long time. it was a little slow paced at time but overall, an interesting & horrifying story

Clearly, way better than the movie.

Giving five stars to books like this always feels like I'm giving a thumbs up to terrible things. Let's just say my appreciation for this book is 5/5 stars.

This book is a really powerful read that leaves you thinking about it long after you have finished reading. It is not a novel, so those expecting one will be disappointed, it is the autobiography of free man kidnapped into slavery and reads as a re-telling of this period of his life. So disturbing at times, but I'm so glad I have read it.

I'm so glad that Solomon Northrup shared his story. Growing up in this area of Louisiana it was mind blowing and eye opening to me.

Moving, interesting, well written, eloquent and sad memoir about life under slavery. Enough said - recommended!
