I bought this book to read and check the Page to Screen Kindle Challenge, and I could not have picked a better one to read than this.
It took me a longer time than usual to finish this one 'cause I just felt like my head couldn't take everything that was happening, thinking that this happened to who wrote the words I was reading, and not some historian, it was as real as it could get.
These are the types of books to put on reading challenges.
I am of different nationality, but my history relates to being slaves of foreign people,
on our home land. And history will never forget.
A good read, looking forward to watch the movie.

An ideal historical source that is detailed, well-organized, readable, and spell-binding. Northup's odyssey spans the entire eastern US, taking us from upstate New York to Washington DC and finally to Louisiana. This journey demonstrates how slavery was not just a southern issue, and how its injustice affected all black Americans.
Northup's memoir showcases the emotional and physical abuse that slave owners relied on. His deliverance comes via loyal friends, considerate white allies, and legal reform; themes that remain relevant today. As a historian, I appreciated his extensive descriptions of farming techniques, carpentry tasks, and food preparation.

My husband has a gift for finding obscure books that are wonderful surprises. This was one such book. It was gut wrenching to read while at the same time incredibly compelling. I just saw the movie and while the movie was well done, it does not compare to the book. Read the book.
A moving personal account of the horrors of slavery. It was very interesting to read this man's story in his own words.

Wow, what a story. These are definitely ones that we do not hear much about but I am afraid to say, it probably was not that uncommon. I don't know that I would have had the strength and courage to go on under these circumstance. What an amazing man to do what he needed to do to survive and get back to his family. Kudos to the man that helped start his rescue and all the people that helped him become free again. I would be proud to come from these lineages.
Such a dark time in our history that we cannot forget. It is important for us to learn from our past. We need to learn to forgive the oppressors and not take it out on their ancestors and also to forgive our ancestors that may have partaken in these atrocities against others. We are all people and we all deserve love, freedom, happiness, etc. I hope we can continue forward in these pursuits for all.
