Final volume and it's actually a relief to know I won't want to keep this trilogy of huge hardcover omnibuses any longer! I know the nature of manga and the period, a lot of short chapters, just keep the ball rolling, but there's just no way to maintain the intensity and intruige of the first and second collections, and it starts throwing a lot of B-movie cliches in, which might be your thing! It just felt more comical compared to the terror of earlier chapters. Then there's the ending, which is kind of nothing, like, oh well, I guess it's over!

What the Drifting Classroom does best is find hope and love in a realm of absolute nightmare, a realm not so different from our present reality - one of disaster, violence, and despair. It warns us to take care of our planet, but it doesn’t underestimate the tenacity of life to begin again anew, nor for the human spirit to rise above all adversity.

“I wish Sho’s mother, all mothers, and all of you an abundance of joy.”

Frankly, a disappointing end to a story that became a bit of a slog to finish. I wasn't as let down as my son but I've read more bad endings than he has. Did the ending retroactively ruin the first two volumes? No, it isn't that bad, but it underscored how much more important the journey was than the destination.
