4 stars on the dot! I am familiar with the concept of a second book being better than the first, and that is very true with this series. We got more context in this novel, better descriptions, and I finally found out what era we existed in. I found some aspects of the story to be easily guessed, but others took me for a spin. The character development we see in Emilia is a slow burn but worth it towards the end. Wrath, what can I say about Wrath? I just adore him. A man who truly would do anything to protect those he loves, even if it means omitting the truth (which results in his chosen isolation). I find the theme of choice in this series to be beautiful. The choice of not only one’s fate, but in how one chooses to accept themselves for who they are and who they can be. So excited to read the last book!
This book was addicting as all hell. Although I was a little confused by the path with the mirror and key and how she was so easily led by Envy to search for these, I get it, when you want answers sometimes, you’ll follow any lead you can get. I found Emelia’s character more enjoyable in this book. It seemed that she was becoming truer to herself and not so recklessly out for blood at every turn, even if she is made of fire and fury. Super happy with where the plot is going and damn the tension between Wrath and her is soooo tantalizing. After reading this one I relistened to the audiobook during our 12 hour drive back from upstate NY and it felt like all the details clicked, Kerri Maniscalco kills it with the foreshadowing. Kingdom of the Cursed held a lot of answers that kept us engaged in Kingdom of the Wicked and gave me many more questions. I can’t wait for the next one!

That ended at an irritating time. Now I need to know what happens next.

Overall, the book felt like it made more sense than the first. I thought the chemistry was better, the overall writing was better and I just enjoyed the plot. There still seems to be a bit too much going on and not enough linear change. I still got lots of whiplash on the back and forth of Emilia hating Wrath and then being obsessed with him. We learn why she likes him in this book with the marriage bond, but honestly I’m still confused why she didn’t like him in the first place from the second book.
While the writing was much better, I still felt like dialogue jumped a lot to where it didn’t make sense to the reader. Someone would say something wild and it would be a completely different meaning to us. I guess that’s intentional? Made conversations hard to follow especially with no explanation from the characters mind.
I wish we got Wrath’s POV. The foundation of him and Emilia’s relationship is just confusing because of the first book.
I feel like losing her magic should be a way bigger deal but it felt like a subplot. I also feel like her training should’ve included more of learning the dark arts if Wrath was so appalled she wasn’t taught them. I don’t understand this.
I’m also so curious how Envy becomes likable because I LOVED him in Throne of the Fallen, haha.
Also acknowledgments mentioned a map but I didn’t see one. Bummed!!
“There is nothing more dangerous than a woman who owns who she is and apologizes to no one”
“I believe I am powerful, therefore I am”

I’m so upset that I started reading this series before it was finished… September can’t come soon enough…
