Really interesting idea, but not sure about the execution. Read it for CHID Jr Colloquim - for week on border politics and Zombies. Thinly veiled parallels on immigration, "woke ideology"/MAGA, war on crime. Great to think about memory and identity/personhood, relationships, and what makes us, us. Very interesting that the man is only referred to as "the man". Faustina was such a baddie - I wish we had more about her life + law firm! I feel like if this was a rom-com on Faustina and the Man's relationship, and him becoming a part of Faustina's life, it would make it a fun read while still allowing for insightful commentary (esp on power imbalance, and how people percieve/accept reanimated ppl, and roadblocks they face).
Inspired by Mary Shelley's classic, Frankenstein, this tells the story of a man who has been "reanimated" thanks to modern technology where the population is replenished by people who are created by merging parts of other deceased people together, wiping their memories, but not their skills and giving them new life. The unnamed man navigates a new relationship, the anti-reanimated political culture of the nation, and the desire to learn more about his culture and history.
This book was a really awesome concept, and I loved the Chicano characters, but I felt like it left me hanging at the end when it was just getting good - almost as if the book was rushed to completion to meet a deadline rather than to complete the story or even fully develop the characters to their potential.

I was maybe too excited about this premise and had too high expectations for such a short read. I felt it was too on the nose with its politics, not enough "show not tell". Even more, the characters fell flat and the plot was dull.

If it is Frankenstein ima read it. So I was excited to hear sbout this book. I would say it is a little more inspired than a retelling but it was good.
In this one the author focuses on what would be the political fall out if scientists could reanimate humans. In the book they are able to take someone who was healthy that died in an accident and give them new body parts to bring them back to life, but they don't really remember who they were before.
The chapters kind of alternate between a man who was reanimated and his story, which was really good. And the other chapters were what the government was doing to try and ban reanimation. It takes place after 45s first term so it is relevent.
This was a really easy read. It wasn't too long and still got the point across. It is worth picking up if it's your thing.
