It was interesting to me how Tom and his business partners took advantage of White privilege when setting up their company, knowing that people of color with "ethnic" names wouldn't get the same reception as someone with a White-sounding name.

I am loving this series.

Milo and Tom were so swoony. They had intense chemistry and I adored seeing them together. And Tom as a single dad? That was an unexpected delight - I loved Libe. She was so sweet.

I was expecting more conflict regarding the issue of Milo's workplace - but nothing really ever came from that. The conflict between the two of them ended up being more about Tom's money so that was interesting.

In the end I just loved this couple...and every time Tom spoke in Spanish to Camilo I just about died. That was so sexy to me.

I really loved the story, although I’m not really sure I “bought” the dark moment, especially considering there wasn’t a very satisfying conclusion to it. However, goodness gracious, this book was FILLED with grammatical errors. I can’t even tell you how many I reported to Amazon through my Kindle. At a certain point, I had to stop reporting the errors because I was growing tired of all the free editing I was giving out. This author has created such great characters and fascinating stories, but the execution is just not there. A few more rounds of editing were definitely needed.

Once again, Herrera creates a tapestry of American cultures, woven together by food, family, history, and language, all set against a background of true, honest love. I've been raring to get my hands on this book ever since the teaser in the back of American Dreamer, and it doesn't disappoint.

Through the evolving relationship between Camilo and Tom, the reader gets a celebratory but honest glimpse into the role of identity, privilege, wealth, mental illness and the value of where we come from. The fairytale is as much the love between the characters, as it is the world where social services get the resources they need and every individual gets the opportunity they deserve. As a reader, I feel like I truly knew each of the characters, warts and all, and their happily ever after is both deserved and long-lasting. I'm a sucker for the Family We Make type friend groups and Herrera is an expert at them.

If you want a book that celebrates love in romance, family, and friends, as well as hope, opportunity, and joy in the things that make us different, American Fairytale is the book for you.

Usually I can suspend disbelief for romances but parts of this plot were uncomfortable for me. I love this author and she did handle it carefully, but still I was put off by the donor/nonprofit worker situation. There were definitely parts I really enjoyed.
