A decent story and excellent artwork. A nice update (in my mind) to the Galactus storyline. Not planets at risk but universes. Ignore the science but the characters are very strong.

This is indeed dark; end-of-the-world, apocalypse, or abomination this scale, spanning multiverses. It's good to see how the heroes, the Illuminati, reacts during this disaster with vert little time to think and be reasonable. Whatever the consequences of their actions, whether to destroy another world, however they will be changed after this is significant. This time no single villain to go against. This time the conflict is with the circumstance.
I guess I need to check the timeline this happened and the events after this to see how. But it's one of those storylines where the heroes have no use of their abilities, that those strengths or intellect or powers are not the bigger issue in deciding the mean to an end.

Excellent, compelling, enthralling! Storytelling idiosyncrasies aside, Hickman has clearly crafted a complex and broad narrative of which this is only the exciting start!!! Also, I loved the characterization of Black Panther here. He's brooding, quiet, but also confident and decisive. I look forward to the rest of Hickman's Avengers saga!

This was a very well-written book with excellent art featuring characters that I liked (especially Black Panther, and with the exception of Namor) tackling a very grim subject and not being especially heroic.

This is one of those that is objectively good, but not for me. Good enough though that I'll read the next.

Ohhhhh, this was actually pretty good.

Quick premise summary: There are a bunch of Earths. Things got screwed up somewhere, so Earths are basically crashing into each other. The Avengers face a difficult problem. Can they figure out how to stop this happening over and over, and at what point do they consider destroying the other Earths (and, presumably, all the beings living on it)?

It's a darker story, and it exposes the darker side of some characters.

This is the best version of Mr. Fantastic I've ever seen. He seems smart for once. There are some really great scenes where he's interrogating a prisoner.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. A really good choice if you can handle seeing wholesome characters behaving in practical but cold-hearted ways

The art is beautiful, but this is my own fault because I literally had to wiki three of the characters. It's very hard to just drop into the New Avengers without some background.

Definitely more of an Illuminati (not the Jay-Z and Beyonce kind) book!
Reading this in tandem with Hickman's Avengers run before I dig into Marvel's new Secret Wars.
Absolutely loving it! Really good spot to jump in if you want to get into Marvel before everything gets smushed together!

First impressions was just wow. From the offset.

This series introduces us to the Illuminati - a group of heroes who have formed a secret coalition in order to deal with extremely big events in secret. It introduces some characters that aren't currently known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Black Panther, Black Bolt, Dr Strange and Namor) and does a very good job of showcasing who they are and their morals. Whereas the Avengers has a full roster of characters - so many that you can struggle to keep up - this nicely limits it. The characters involved are all interesting and have independent thoughts and experiences that you can grasp almost straight away without knowing any of their history - cinematic universe or otherwise.

I can find no fault with these volumes. It introduces everything well and carries the story along with a pace that's not too much information overload yet keeps you turning the pages and moving forward excitingly. It does link in with the Avengers, but only in a very small teeny tiny overlap. If you don't want to read the Avenger's then you can still thoroughly enjoy this series and I whole heartedly recommend it to any of you who have thought about picking up comics, enjoy the marvel films, or even seasoned comic readers. It's a good starter comic without being an origin cliché.

I really liked Hickman's work on Fantastic Four, one of the few books I tried to read while on an extended time way from comics. I should have added his Avengers books to the list!

Illuminati, a group of Marvel superheroes who have come together in different occasions when the challenges faced are bigger that any one team. This book is extraordinary in scope and presents the members at their worst, with moral choices that surpass what any consensus would yield. Really recommended.
