Since I’ve loved books 1-3 dearly, I was left kinda disappointed with A Court of Frost and Starlight. It’s way thinner than the other parts and lacks thrill due to the swiftches of perspective. It was nice to get to know each character better and understand the plot but I’m glad I’ve finished reading it.

A sweet little bridge between books 3 and 4. Avid fantasy readers maybe didn’t appreciate this welcome reprieve from battle and death, but I certainly enjoyed every fluff-soaked page, which still held a great deal of substance and heart. I loved being in Velaris (during Winter Solstice) for the entirety of the book, and learning how each character was coping after the war. This novella served as a nice DLC, as it were, for the ACOTAR series, while not taking anything away from the main storylines. Just what every romantasy series needs.

We love a slice of life. That's what's great about this - it's a total break from the intense plot of the rest of the series so far.

Misses 4 stars for me because the book, while a good & easy read, missed a depth that would have pushed it over the top. Really liked it though!

It's billed as a sweet, gentle time where our beloved gang is able to savor their victory.

But healing isn't always pretty, nor is it simple.

I was content with this novella, a brief break from the fear and stress I feel when reading the full-length novels.

It was, though, by no means the masterful writing that I'm used to from SJM. I understand, it's a novella; but it felt like SJM also wanted a break from her typical style. This was a rather significant deviation. I'm certain there was potential for more in this: more endearing moments, more insight, more warm fuzzies. I felt like we were just stalling or passing time with this, rather.

All in all, it's still SJM - still quality but my metrics for her writing are higher, and my disappointment docks 1.5 stars.
