136 pages of nothing happening.

This great series really deepens here in this volume.

Deep subplots, memorable characters and action a-plenty keep us begging for more.

I can't wait to get my hands on subsequent volumes!

Pretty uneventful. There are some hints that there might be a larger world in the first collection, but we don't get much development, just a lot of the same stuff. Between all the dull politics, flashbacks, and discussions of exposition, not much happens.

The art improves, and there are some experiments in style, but nothing remarkable. We still have the same-face problem between characters and the few action scenes can come off as muddy.

Lacks the development of the first collection and the action of the next collection, feels rather like a placeholder as the author tries to get his notes in order. It's always a problem when an author has a big, laboriously-detailed setting, because it's difficult to display those settings to the audience without getting lost in long asides and discussions from the characters about how cool the world is.

As the old advice goes, you have to be willing to kill your darlings. People like to build big, complex worlds, but the world should always be secondary to the story, should build the story. The minute the world becomes more complex and central than the plot and characters, we have a problem.

And it's not like the world, social structures, or language are particularly unique or intriguing. It's all standard Post-Apocalyptic stuff. In these cases, it's best to briefly introduce concepts (ideally, unobtrusively in a scene about something more vital), and let the audience piece it together. Instead, we have an overexplicated setting and a plot that we struggle to piece together.

Some good action and hints as to the larger story. Plus some denizens of the city turn out to not be two-dimensional.

This post apocalyptic story just lost me. I don't know if reading volume 1 would of helped. I just didn't understand what the point of this society was. Sun worship and slavery.
