Fast-paced, and lacking some of the depth of its prequel. Leans more heavily on the original TV series, too, partially because more of its characters cross over.

Recking of Ruko is a compelling and thoughtful exploration of identity, friendship, and duty, offering fans of the Avator: The Last Airbender universe, deeper insight into Roku's legacy and the choices that shaped his journey as an Avatar.

As an Avatar fanatic (having watched both series multiple times and read almost all of the accompanying stories and graphic novels), I knew I had to invest some time in Avatar Roku’s early life. If you are familiar with the Last Airbender, you know that many relationships and plotlines are somewhat doomed from the start. That puts Ribay in a tricky position. However, I found Roku and Gyatso eminently interesting and complex characters. The attempt to make Sozin a complex character is there, but his future actions cast a pall over his friendship with Roku. While I was not a fan of a plot turn towards the end of the book, I do find myself compelled to read the sequel. Expect this to be less politically complex than the Yangchen series and less action-packed compared to Kyoshi's stories.
