Before reading this book, all I knew about the League of Legends universe (or Runeterra) is all the things I still remembered from Arcane (which only focused on a small part of that world), some stuff from the Sentinels of Light event (which people hated), and the names I recognize from the games I’ve played, even if I knew nothing about the stories behind those characters. And after reading this book, I feel like I really want to know more about these characters and places now, even the ones that this book only briefly mentioned. And considering the context of this book (being the first published novel set in this universe), I guess it means the book did its job.
Anthony Reynolds’ Ruination tells the story of Kalista, a warrior from the land of Camavor, she has always been loyal to Camavor, but deep down, she hates the imperialistic and corrupt nature of her fellow ruling class. When her uncle, Viego, becomes king, she becomes his most trusted advisor, vowing to protect him at all cost. Even when an assassin tried to kill the young king, Kalista managed to protect Viego. But it came at a cost, as the poisoned blade Kalista deflected hit Viego’s wife, Isolde instead. Racked with desperation and slowly losing his sanity, Viego would try anything to keep Isolde alive and make her well again, even if it means letting his kingdom crumble. And it’s up to Kalista to make sure it doesn’t happen.
I didn’t expect much coming into this book. I thought I would just recognize names and find out about their stories, and that’s about it. And while yes, I did get that experience, it was also so much more than that. Similar to how it was with Arcane, these characters are in a much earlier point in time compared to how I know them from the games. A lot of the time, I just go “Oh hey, I know your name!” often followed by “But you seem so different from how i know you.”, and I think that’s a really fun experience, and it’s probably even more fun for people who don’t play the game, because then you wouldn’t be spoiled about how these characters will end up. I think this is a really good book. It set out to do something specific, and it managed to do that while telling a great story that is full of memorable characters, but I don’t think it’s perfect.

Video game story
Based on the video game League Of Legends (which I've never played). This epic fantasy story reads like game play, like they spliced all the cut scenes together. While I do occasionally play video games, it's not usually fantasy RPG's. While I enjoyed the story, some of the motivations and POV's from the women in the story gave very strong written by a man energy. Especially in regards to feminine rage which not many men seem to be able to be able to depict well. Did make me interested in picking up the game though.
